Guest Post: Obi’s World of Great Make-Up

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Today our guest blog is from Emma’s very good friend Obi, who offered some time ago to write about a subject she feels is never covered much – make up for dark skin.  We jumped at the chance – so without further ado – here she rolls!

MY WORLD FOR GREAT MAKEUP!!!!!!!

Hi! I am honoured to be a guest blogger on this wonderful site. As someone who was invited to the wedding and given the honour of doing a reading, I thought that this would be an ideal time to talk about something slightly different to flowers and dresses and introduce something which is important to all of us, but with a twist —Make-up for darker skin!!

Like everyone else, I have trawled the shops and websites looking for the ideal make-up which is either a quick fix or a luxurious treat.

Most of the time I have just done with mascara and eye-liner as this is something which everyone can get, but saying that, I have stuck with regulatory black as this is something that you can’t really get wrong.

Finding foundation and powder is something a bit harder as most brands don’t carry colours for darker skin, but fear not I have discovered Sleek Make up which not only features black models but does make up for all skin tones.

Sleek makeup is cheap with 17 – yes 17 – different shades, with 4 colours which are suitable for darker skin. I would recommend Hot Chocolate, Sable and Coffee Bean-if you are ordering online and not too sure of the shade you can buy little testers which are even cheaper.

Sleek also does a range of blushes and lipsticks that are a revelation too.

For the more luxurious (expensive) I would recommend Beverly Knight which again is available in department stores.

Another great brand, which features a lot of different shades, which some of us find difficult to find. Although I have only recommended two brands I hope this helps us girls of colour and if in doubt….. Go au naturel!!!

The Wedding Eve.

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

My stomach is in knots. I couldn’t sleep last night. I kept wondering about all the things that could go wrong & how I could fix them.
The flowers, the eyelashes, the dress, the hair, oh the hair.

Then I realised. Its not even my wedding!!!

Ahhhhh!!! Tomorrow one of my best friends & blogger extraordinaire, Emma, is getting MARRIED.

I’m sooooo excited, but so nervous for her too. I know all the ins & outs of this wedding! Especially the un-writable version which would look, at times, more like a journey through the Hellmand Province to the aisle.
Fortunately, there have not been many casualties of this battle-to-the-alter, except maybe Emma’s sanity.
Most texts & emails from Emma this year have begun “Oh Charlotte”… its been a mine field at times & we have both learned so much about an industry & event that we love so much!

The things is, I KNOW how amazing its going to be. I KNOW.
There are some secrets that Emma hasn’t revealed to me- we all like a wedding surprise afterall!
Like many a-Bride-gone-by, she has worked impressively hard to get to this day. Really hard. And in only 9 months, which I think most of you would agree isn’t much time to plan a large wedding!

Not only has there been the meeting of families, choosing of Maids & co-ordination of the seemingly impossible, but there has also been detail. Lots of hand-made detail.
I’m still so impressed with the pom poms!
Oh and the small matter of having a full time job which includes long-haul travel, honouring all her friend’s events & oh yes, setting up a blog site to share her experience to help others.

She even wrote a song about her fears over the volcano ruining her honeymoon!

If you have missed any of this journey.. you can catch up in Emma’s Electric Dreams

I hear some squeal about how its been done before… but I think she deserves a huge pat on the back. I think all Brides do!
And possibly a stiff drink.
Then a BIG holiday!!!

So, today, I write this as an acolade to Emma & all the Brides for 2010 who have worked impressively hard at making their Big Day special for everyone!
I’m sending you a lifetime of Love & Happiness!

Oh Emma.

Fairy Tale for Sale part 2

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

A while back we did a little post on behalf of one of our readers Lucinda – who has a totally gorge dress she would like to sell. She found a buyer who unfortunately fell through, so it is back on the market – and she has reduced it for a quick sale.

Lucinda is getting married in August (congratulations Lucinda!), and has purchased as very fabulous Claire Pettibone gown.

Unfortunately she is now getting married in Venice and the gown isn’t quite right for the venue (lets face it, this isn’t very unfortunate at all is it! Jealous? Us? OF COURSE WE ARE)!

So now she is looking for a new home for her super fabulous dress, and she wants to see it go to a good home because its so beautiful!

The gown is Lucia… It’s a US size 6 (UK size 8-10), and, take it from me, this dress is spectacular.

Check out the dress on Lucinda’s ebay page here

If you are interested, then give us a shout at info@electricwedding.co.uk and we will forward it on to Lucinda.

Be quick, because you have about 30 minutes before I cave and buy it myself – a girl can have more than one wedding dress can’t she?

Good luck!

Graffiti Chic

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Hello wedding chick-a-dees!

I am writing a second little post today after being inspired by a post I saw on Whimsical Wonderland Wedding (a lovely pretty blog about Lou getting married that I found on Sunday and love, go on and have a look!)

We have decided to do something a little bit different to a standard guest book (mainly because when they come round I haven’t got a clue what to write).  This idea was from Matt’s mum who has suggested we get a paper tablecloth and a jar of felt tip pens, and let the guests graffiti whatever they like!

Just call us Banksy eh?

The idea is then we take the big sheets of paper to a printer and then they copy them for us into smaller cards we can put together in a little book to keep.

And it means everyone can have a good old scribble! Food stains? Part of the charm :-)

Electric Top Tip; Be flexible

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I’m getting married!!! Yayyyyyyy!!
When?
What’s you budget? Are you doing it locally?
Um…..

Ok, so you know you need to set a date. But seriously, what’s the rush? Even if you are planning to get married in a few months, take a minute to consider your options as this could save you hundreds, if not thousands of your hard earned cash!!
I appreciate, that like me, you may have considered the venue, bridesmaids & favours a fair few months before you even got the ring…. but now’s the time to make the real decisions.

So, here’s today’s Electric Top Tip (for those who can)

Be flexible when choosing a date

Its a tradition to have weddings on a Saturday so we can “make a weekend of it”. This is great, but you can save so much on changing the day! Sometimes up to 50%.. some venues are FREE on a weekday!
Unfortunately many venues have cottoned on to people having weddings on a Friday to save money so these meanies have re-worked Fridays & Sundays in to the peak prices! Some very unloving venues have even extended this to Thursdays!! Steer clear of these places. They are out to get more of your money than you should spend. After all, being flexible is about saving some of your hard earned cash!
Top Tip; Ask for a full weekly price guide which includes optional extras.
This way you can see what you may be ‘stung’ for & see if the venue is giving you a saving for your flexibility.
Remember; They rarely have week day weddings & need YOURS! If they don’t do you a great discount for a wedding Monday-Thursday. they don’t deserve you!

So, what you really want to know is, am I taking my own advice?!
I sure am! Although we have not picked a venue yet (another budget-related drama), we have tentatively agreed a date… 1st September 2011.
A Thursday.
We checked with my mum, a teacher, so she’s on school holidays as are my future sister-in-laws, plus dad’s free & many others have no problem with taking a few weekdays off for our wedding!
Its up to you, but it might be worth checking with you nearest & dearest first.

Do you have any op Tips you’d like to share?
Us B2Bs need to know!
I will give you a big Electric wedding shout out for helping all Our Electric Brides!
Plus, if you would like to share a little more, you can send us a picture of you & your partner to accompany your tip

The Electric Directory

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Since we have become engaged, we have spent hours trawling through search engines looking for those small, hard to find, or just plain fabulous wedding suppliers and services that often slip through the big corporate wedding net.

We have both sat and wished many times that there was a simple website out there that gave us a place to start when looking for ideas on how to make our wedding different.  While we could find lots of inspiration from other brides weddings, we wanted more – we wanted the ability to create the ideas ourselves.

The Electric Directory is a service that allows wedding suppliers to advertise their business, whilst providing all you brides with a one stop site for all your wedding fancies!

The aim of the directory is not just to list every business that comes along – months trawling through websites has shown us that unique wedding suppliers are hard to find. Instead we would like to provide what we hope is a little representation of all the individual and different types of wedding peeps out there!

We want to list everything from photographers to florists right down to pretty chair cover suppliers and in-case-it-rains-umberella hire.

If you are a wedding business who would like to be considered for our directory, or find out more about how to become part of it, or if you are a bride who has used someone you would like to share with us, then drop us a line on info@electricwedding.co.uk.

Remember, there are no limits when it comes to this list, so all suggestions are welcome!

Love

Emma & Charlotte
